New Drummer Alert! Welcome Dane The Drummer

It is with great pleasure that we introduce Dane “The Drummer” Michaels to The Ukuleles band. Yes his nickname really is the drummer! A fun fact about Dane is that, among many other things, he known for using drumsticks for metal music. Despite not liking nor playing heavy metal music

With all jokes aside, we are very happy toย  welcome Dane to our band. Dane will provide drums for us for the bigger shows and he will switch to percussion for the smaller shows that we have lined up. You can expect some great grooving from this young lad.

    Who Is Dane The Drummer?

Dane Michaels is a 28 year old drummer from Suffolk. However, Dane moved to London a few years back to firstly study at The Institute of Contemporary Performance and secondly pursue his passion for drumming and make it a full time career.

Dane is a classically trained pianist. However, he has been playing drums since the age of 16 and has been in band ever since. The addition of Dane to The Ukuleles band was no coincidence. This is due to the fact that we as a band have known Dane the drummer from the London music. it was a natural progression and addition to add him to our lineup and we are so excited to enhance our live performance and sound.

What Drum Gear Does Dane Use?

We can split Dane’s gear into two separate sections depending on the type of gig we’ll be playing. Should the gig be a loud club or pub gig then Dane will bring out his full acoustic drumkit with cymbals and Roland SPD-SX sample pad. The type of drumkit that he’ll bring is a Gretsch bop kit which I think is called the Catalina. The bop kits are small and compact drum kits and just perfect for the needs of our band. You can see a picture of this drumkit below:

When we play smaller, more stripped down shows. Then Dane will turn into the percussion man. Still utilising his trusty Roland sample pad. Except he usually adds a kick drum trigger to the sample pad for these types of gigs as the volume can be controlled and turned down (or up) to a suitable level. He’ll mix that with some bongos and some shakers for rhythms etc.

    New Album Recording

This is probably also a great opportunity to announce that we’ve begun working on new demos for our latest upcoming album. And we are once again so glad that Dane will be able to join us on this recording journey as well as to add some of his drumming and percussive flavour to our new album.

We have no release date in mind yet, however be sure to keep your eyes on our social media as well as on our website for more updates and information about our recordings as well as our latest gigs and live shows.

Once again, Welcome Dane the drummer and look forward to a long and prosperous musical journey with him in The Ukuleles band.

  • Ukulele Gear That We Like And Use

Hello to everyone out there! ๐Ÿ™‚

Today we thought we’d share something with you that not many bands tend to do. And that is give you a bit of insight into the ukulele gear that we use.

In all honesty, the gear we use is very simple and can be found in most music stores around the country. However, we thought we’d share this information with you because we often get asked the question about the gear that we use. We also get a lot of questions asking us which brands or types of ukuleles we recommend for those wanting to pick up the instrument for the first time.

As a result of this, we decided to answer the question as well as hopefully guide you to making an informed decision when it comes time for you to buy your own ukulele.

    What Ukulele Does Logan Use?

Logan uses a very high-end Ukulele made by Kala. The model in particular is the Solid Acacia Tenor. It retails for over $500 so this model is not necessarily ideal for beginners however if you are looking for a ukulele to last you a lifetime then this would be a great investment and instrument as the sound it makes will only get better over time as the wood ages. These Ukuleles are a made in the United States if I’m not mistaken.

The tenor is the third biggest out of the four ukulele sizes which include in soprano, concert, tenor and baritone. The tenor size will generally produce a lower sound than a soprano. Logan will use his fingers to play the ukulele which is often said to be the most traditional way in which to play. However, there are times when he will use a ukulele pick. When it comes to using a ukulele plectrum, most players gravitate towards the felt picks. Felt picks are actually also used as bass guitar picks. The picture below is a fantastic example of the bass guitar picks that are also used as ukulele picks.

    What Ukulele Does Martha Use?

stagg ukuleleMartha plays a really nice ukulele made by Stagg. Stagg is a well known brand that not only make ukuleles but also make other instruments too such as bass guitars, regular acoustic and electric guitars as well as amplifiers and other guitar accessories . Whilst this Stagg Ukulele is a great model, it is more suited for those on a budget. That is not to take away from the fact that it is infact a very good quality instrument and just because it is so called “budget friendly” does not mean that it should be synonymous with poor quality.

You can hear these two fantastic ukuleles in action in the video below ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Who We Are

A new Ukulele phenomena and revival has been happening all over the world and has now hit the University campuses, beaches and homes across the UK. This small 4-string guitar has been riding high on a wave of popularity of late and has become a symbol of laid back, relaxed and good will vibes.

The Ukuleles are a fresh new young and exciting band who are capturing a musical moment in history. Logan a self taught player discovered his love of the instrument at a very early age when he lived in Hawaii, he honed his skills and mastered the instrument very quickly after watching the Hawaiians finger movements as the strummed. When he returned to the UK he explored other instruments but would always come back to the simplistic and soothing sounds of the Uke.

Fast forward to 2012 and Logan was at the Great Escape Festival in Brighton when he spotted Martha who was performing with her Uke on the ACM stage. He felt an immediate connection, they were introduced and very quickly formed a firm friendship over many days on the beach strumming and jamming with friends. Martha had already gained a reputation as a credible singer and Uke player on the Internet and festival gig circuit. She picked up a Uke after watching her hero Jack Johnson in concert and fell in love with it.

With Loganโ€™s credible and authentic Hawaiian grounding Logan saw a unique opportunity to team up with Martha and a ukulele playing band of friends to form a band to represent the current culture of what is happening today and throw in some new ukulele songs too. The Ukuleles were born.
